It's beginning to feel a lot like Christmas.... kind of! An Expat version of Christmas in Ibiza.

The lead up to Xmas makes you think of snowflakes, cozy fireplaces , and christmas jumpers. But if you're an expat mum from England living in sunny Ibiza, Christmas takes on a whole new vibe. Imagine swapping woolly jumpers and chilly mornings for t-shirts and palm trees! It took me some time to get used to this big change in the festive scene, but after afew years experiencing the lead up to the big day here with my kids, I've found that Ibiza has its own holiday charm.

The Landscape of an Ibiza Christmas

When I first moved to Ibiza... celebrating Christmas under a clear blue sky struck me as weird. Obviously I love the sun and I moved to this gorgeous little paradise Island to escape the cold mornings and the constant grey. But, there is just something magical about being in the UK at Christmas. In England, the air buzzes with festivities—think bustling Christmas markets featuring steaming mulled wine and freshly baked mince pies. Everywhere is lit up, xmas music fills the air.

Here in Ibiza theres a different kind of celebration. While there may not be a deep sense of winter holiday atmosphere, the island offers its own festive flair, just in a more understated way.

Embracing a New Kind of Festivity

The pace here is slow, and instead of grand Christmas events, local charm reigns. Community gatherings, outdoor markets, and sunset strolls become the focal point of the season.

There is also a different kind of coming together at Christmas. Most people I know back at home suffer some kind of family politics; who to spend the holidays with can be stressful when trying to please everyone. Those that stay on the island often opt to celebrate with their chosen families. Families mix and friendship groups congregate to celebrate with everyone they love; and the result is incredible. Relaxing festive days, spent slowly and at ease. There doesn't seem to be the rush of home or the pressure that comes with visiting at xmas.

It is a different kind of celebration, but a lovely one! If you find yourself surrounded by palm trees this Christmas, embrace the experience rather than long for snow!

While I try to keep up my English traditions, blending both cultures has enriched our holiday celebrations. We always have a traditional british Christmas dinner... but perhaps we will add in a taste of Ibiza, with a big family paella on xmas eve, or a jamon on Xmas day - merging flavors that delight everyone at the table.

Family Challenges

One of the most significant challenges living away from home has been planning for xmas. It is always so expensive to fly home at this tme hof year - especially as a family of 4. Then once we get to the other side there is a hire car, or trains (hell at xmas time) and traipsing from place to place, the kids over stimulated and out of routine and it just becomes a lot. Imagine my joy when we decided to stay in Ibiza this year and my famiy all jumped at the chance to join us!

Planning for the Holidays

With family visiting, I eagerly curated an itinerary showcasing the best of what Ibiza has to offer during the holidays. The island is bursting with activities, and I'm excited to share its gems.

Here are my favorite tips for celebrating Christmas in Ibiza:

  1. Visit the Christmas Markets

One highlight during the festive season is exploring the xmas markets. You can find handmade crafts, seasonal sweets, and unique gift options. There are loads of things to do for the kids including small fairground rides and bouncy castles. Plus, the San Antonio markets has a schedule of live music, elf shows & Santa visits - sure to keep the little ones entertained.

  2. Xmas Beach Day

Instead of a snowy Christmas, try a festive picnic on the beach. Pack a spread of local treats along with beach games to enjoy a fun and relaxed day. If you are here on New Years Day - head to Salinas Beach for an incredible experience of hundreds of people running ionto the sea! Its super fun and a great excuse to get together.

  3. Participate in Local Traditions

Engaging in local events such as the 3 Kings celebration on 6th January is a fantastic way to immerse yourself in the culture. The lively parades, music, and festivity create a festive extention to Christmas day itself.

  4. Enjoy a Sunset Dinner

Picture a meal with family while the sun dips below the horizon. Many local restaurants offer special holiday menus combining traditional dishes and local flavors, creating a feast for both the eyes and taste buds. Santa Eulalia & Ibiza Town are my favorite spots.

  5. Explore Nature Trails

Trade winter walks for scenic trails. Ibiza boasts beautiful hikes, providing breathtaking views of the coast and countryside.

Finding Joy in Simplicity

Being an expat mother in Ibiza has transformed how I celebrate Christmas, and I couldn’t be more thankful that I have the opportunity to experience Christmas this way . There is a unique joy in experiencing the season from a fresh perspective. Embracing diverse cultures enriches not just our holidays, but our lives. May your festive season be filled with love, laughter, and perhaps some sunshine too!
